It’s Faust Friday! Our favorite friend has a question for all of you…

What was the hardest decision you’ve had to make in The Arcana so far? What did you eventually choose?

We look forward to hearing each of your stories! ☄️

The decision re: Faust and the Devil’s deal wrecked me for a good week. I replayed the chapter with every possible choice and it just sucked more and more

Seeing and Hearing @kingblottothethird’s Mesmerizing Penmanship

To watch more of Seiji’s art in action, follow @kingblottothethird on Instagram.

Seiji Catalado (@kingblottothethird) discovered his calling to calligraphy when a pen in an antique shop caught his attention. “It was over 100 years old, but it was still functioning, doing exactly what it was designed to do,” the 23-year-old says. “It was an exciting and profound experience to me. In our disposable culture, it had maintained its value. I wanted to know how to use it properly.” Soon, Tokyo-born Seiji was able to support his music career by designing logos, wedding invitations and even custom declarations of love. “I find it both an honor and inspiration to act as the medium between two people expressing their appreciation for each other.” Equally exciting to him is sharing a quality about calligraphy most never get to appreciate: its sound. “You can hear the nib scratching across the surface, which creates an auditory rhythm that matches the flow of the ink.” The effect is meditative and hypnotic.

Microbrewery Monday: Wicks Brewing Company

liquidbreadblog

Wicks Brewing Company is a gem of a brewpub located in the outskirts of Riverside, California. Wicks has a large and open taproom with plenty of seating in addition to the bar area. The bar boasts 16 taps, with a rotating guest tap selection in addition to the house brews.  During my visit, they also offered Brandy, a large selection of bottled beer, and their own micro-brewed non-alcoholic root beer. Wicks provides a sturdy bar menu in addition to their impressive beer selection. During my visit, I tried the Ceviche and Jalapeno Pretzel Bites. Both were delicious, but the pretzels were by far some of the best I’ve ever had. In addition to appetizers, they offer a full menu of hot and cold sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, and specialties such as Duck Confit Sliders and a Charcuterie Board with (very fancy) meats and cheese.
Wicks brews a beer for everyone. Starting with the very light Squire (a cream ale) their selections travel through the beer spectrum touching on IPAs, stouts, and brown ales. Notable brews include the Strong Oakes, an oatmeal pale ale that IPA lovers will enjoy; Two Year Siege, a barleywine; and Bard’s Song, a nutty and flavorful pecan brown ale.

Wicks also offers special events in addition to their brew pub experience. I noted that a schedule for a reoccurring “sip and paint” activity was hung on the wall for Tuesday nights, where patrons can drink beer and paint a themed work of art. Additionally, Wicks maintains a group brewing area/brew-on-premises operation, where patrons can brew a beer of their choice under the supervision of one of the members of the brewing staff. Up to six brews can be made at a time. Their recipe book is all-encompassing and they allow you to add your own variants to the recommended ingredient lists. The estimated yield from the brewing class batch is approximately 4 cases of bottled beer, and the cost includes ingredients, bottles, and moderately personalized labels. This is a great party idea for like-minded friends who would like to get into brewing!

If you’re in the area, I highly recommend stopping by. In addition, there is a home brew store and a second brewery (The Brew Crew) within the same commercial complex as Wicks.

Highly emotional to work on getting quotes for a replacement stone for these ancestors who perished in the 1889 Johnstown Flood. These children were drowned with their parents at their home in Somerset Street, directly in line with the wall of water rushing from South Fork. Pervading sorrow just thinking about it.

“From the 1840s until the 1930s a series of social, political, and cultural shifts in the United States were necessary for an acceptance of both the accuracy of and need for the documentation of individual identity that we take for granted today. How was it that a piece of paper twelve inches by eighteen inches came to be accepted as a reliable answer to the question ‘Who are you?’“ - Craig Robertson, The Passport in America, page 3.

The appearance, content, function, and social acceptance of the American passport as an official form of identification has evolved over time - and continues to evolve. The Special Collections Research Center holds many examples of passports issued throughout our country’s history.

The above example comes from the Joel Tanner Hart Papers. Hart (1810-1877) was an American sculptor, born in Kentucky. In 1849, he traveled to Europe, planning to set up a permanent studio in Italy. He first visited Rome but decided to settle in Florence. This arranged, he left Italy for a tour of Western Europe, spending fourteen months studying anatomy in London, and visiting Paris to study the sculptures of the old masters at the Louvre before returning to Florence where he lived for the rest of his life.

Something similar that has popped up in my recent reading was “letters of introduction”, which are fun to think about nowadays.

One of my favorite porters of all time, Edmund Fitzgerald by Great Lakes Brewing Company. This beer taught me that beer is more than just Bud Light and Miller Lite.
